The Occupational and Skills Information System (OaSIS) is a tool developed by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) to help Canadians explore different careers, make job-related decisions such as career transitions, and conduct labour market information research. It provides detailed information about the skills, abilities, and other competencies needed for a wide range of occupations. OaSIS was created to fill a gap in occupational and competency information in Canada, while also ensuring consistency in how occupational data is produced and shared. Drawing on best practices from international systems such as the U.S. O*NET system, the OaSIS database has been tailored to meet the needs of Canadians. The database includes 900 occupations, which have been developed based on the 516 National Occupational Classification (NOC) unit groups.
The goal of the OaSIS is to provide meaningful information on occupations and associated competencies to a wide variety of Canadian users including:
- Youth and students
- Unemployed workers or workers wanting to re-skill or up-skill
- Career and employment counsellors
- Employers, education, and training providers
- Local, provincial, and federal government agencies
OaSIS used O*NET data as an input when assigning ratings to the descriptors for each occupational profile. This data was extracted from O*NET OnLine hosted by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration (USDOL/ETA). Used under the CC BY 4.0 license.
